A WiFi QR code carries your network name, its password and its security type in a format both iPhones and Android phones recognise natively. Scanning it offers to join the network — no app, no typing, no reading a twenty-character password off a laminated card by the door.
This matters most where the password is long and the guest is holding a coffee. Cafés, waiting rooms, holiday lets and offices all hand out the same string dozens of times a week, and every hand-off is a chance to mistype it. A printed code removes the transcription entirely, and because the code is static it keeps working with no account, no subscription and nothing that can expire.
The generator below runs in your browser. Your network name and password are encoded on this page and never sent to us — which is the only sensible arrangement for a credential you are about to put on a wall.
Choosing the security type
The security field tells the phone how to authenticate, and getting it wrong means the join silently fails. Almost every router made in the last decade uses WPA2 or WPA3, and the same setting covers both.
Pick “Open” only for a genuinely passwordless network. A code that claims no security on a protected network will prompt and then refuse.
- WPA / WPA2 / WPA3 — the default for home and business routers
- WEP — only for equipment old enough that replacing it is the better fix
- Open — no password at all, common on public networks
Hidden networks need the flag set
If your router does not broadcast its name, tick the hidden option. Without it the phone looks for a network it can see, does not find yours, and reports that the network is unavailable — which reads like a broken code rather than a missing flag.
One practical note: a hidden network is not a security measure. It stops the name appearing in a list; it does not stop anyone determined. Set the flag because your network is configured that way, not as a precaution.
Where it works and where it does not
iOS has read WiFi codes from the camera app since iOS 11, and Android since version 10. Both offer a join prompt rather than connecting silently, so the guest always sees which network they are joining.
Laptops are the gap. Neither Windows nor macOS joins a network from a camera scan, so a code on a meeting-room wall helps phones and tablets and does nothing for a visitor with a laptop. Print the network name alongside it.
Questions people ask
Does the password stay private?
The code is built in your browser and never uploaded, so we never see your password. But anyone who can photograph the printed code can read the password out of it — treat the print as you would treat the password written down, and put it where you would put that.
What happens if I change the WiFi password?
The printed code stops working, because the password is encoded inside the pattern itself rather than looked up somewhere. Generate a new code and reprint it. If you change the password often, a dynamic code pointing at a page you control is the better arrangement.
Will one code work for both the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands?
Yes, provided both bands use the same network name and password, which is the normal configuration. If your router exposes them as two separate names, you need a code for each.
Can I add my café's logo to it?
Yes, and the generator checks the result still decodes rather than assuming it does. A logo covers modules the scanner needs, so there is a limit to how large it can be before the code stops being readable — you will be told before you print it.
